Minsk, August 29 /Xinhua/ — Belarus plans to soon sign an agreement for the construction of the third power unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant with the Russian state corporation “Rosatom.” This was announced on Friday by the Belarusian Minister of Energy Denis Moroz on the air of the Belarusian TV channel “First Informational.”
“Speaking about the third unit, today we are in very close negotiations with the state corporation Rosatom. I am confident that we will finalize them in the near future and already within the framework of some agreement we will be able to fix the parameters and specific timelines for the implementation of this project,” the minister said.
According to him, the total amount of electricity generated at the Belarusian NPP since its launch has already exceeded 65.5 billion kWh. He noted that Belarus is experiencing a fairly high rate of electricity consumption growth: last year consumption amounted to about 43 billion kWh, and a slightly higher figure is expected in 2026. The country’s nuclear power plant currently produces 40 percent of the total electricity consumption in Belarus.
The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant, located in the Ostrovets district of the Grodno region, was built according to the standard Russian project “AES-2006”.
