One of the largest rolling stock renewal programs in the world is being implemented in the capital’s metro, thanks to which it ranks first among metros in Europe and America.

“We continue the large-scale rolling stock renewal program in accordance with the directive of Sergey Sobyanin. The capital’s metro is a leader in train renewal among cities in Europe and America. Over the past 10 years, the Moscow metro has received more than five thousand new cars. During 2026–2027, delivery of another 700 cars of the most modern and technologically advanced ‘Moscow-2026’ series is expected,” noted the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.

Maxim Liksutov.

In recent years, significant work has been carried out in Moscow: new trains have begun operating on the Filyovskaya, Circle, Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya, and Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya lines, and the Big Circle, Nekrasovskaya, and Troitskaya lines have been fully equipped. In the near future, 12 sets of the “Moscow-2026” series will be launched on the Rublyovo-Arkhangelskaya line.

As a result, the fleet of Moscow Metro cars today is one of the youngest and most modern: their average age has decreased from over 20 years to 11.7 years. At the same time, the share of new trains has increased from about 13 percent in 2010 to 80 percent, and according to the transport strategy, this figure will exceed 90 percent by 2030.

Train “Moscow-2026”

An important milestone was the launch in December 2025, following successful trials, of the new “Moscow-2026” train — the most modern in Russia and one of the most technologically advanced metro trains in the world. It retains all the key advantages of the previous series, while the model is even more comfortable and safer. Its appearance is an important step in the renewal of the Zamoskvoretskaya line: more than 80 percent of the trains on the green line already belong to the new generation.

“Moscow-2026” is a train set that has received a whole range of improvements. Compared to the “Numbered” type carriages, capacity has increased by 10 percent: about 1,500 passengers can travel on one train. This became possible thanks to wide through passages. The width of the doors in the new carriages has been increased by 32 percent, which significantly speeds up boarding and disembarking.

Metro infrastructure

The large-scale program for updating the metro rolling stock is not only about purchasing new cars. For the effective operation of trains, infrastructure maintenance is necessary. Today, the electric depot of the Moscow Metro is its technological heart.

The metropolitan subway is the most equipped in the world in terms of train maintenance. Safety and comfort of trips directly depend on the high-quality service provided around the clock at the depot. The operation of wheel-turning machines increases ride smoothness, automated washing allows clean trainsets to be dispatched, and the pits of the new electric depots are equipped with specialized modern-generation equipment for servicing rooftop installations, including air conditioning systems.

Thanks to the operation of the electric depots, some of the shortest intervals between trains in the world among all metro systems are maintained — just 90 seconds during peak hours on high-demand lines.

Another important element is the service support of new trains under life cycle contracts (LCC). Today, about five thousand modern cars are serviced under LCC. This means that for 30 years the manufacturing plant is responsible for their technical condition, scheduled repairs and diagnostics, maintenance of climate systems, as well as washing and cleaning of trains. This approach supports the reliability and safety of transportation, while motivating manufacturers to continuously improve technical solutions and enhance the quality of produced products.

Industrial development

The rolling stock upgrade program extends far beyond Moscow. The capital’s long-term orders form the foundation for the development of the domestic transport industry, stimulate the adoption of modern technologies, the expansion of production capacities, the localization of product manufacturing, and the retention of highly qualified engineering and labor personnel in the regions.

Today, 75 percent of all equipment and component supplies for urban transport in Russia are accounted for by Moscow. The capital’s investments in renewing the subway rolling stock create large-scale production cooperation among enterprises from dozens of Russian regions. Modern trains for the Moscow Metro are built using domestic components, and Russian enterprises are mastering their own technologies and successfully replacing imported solutions.

At the same time, the products of JSC “Metrowagonmash” are included in the register of Russian industrial products. For example, Saint Petersburg supplies video surveillance systems and doors for new generation trains.

Tver Oblast is one of the leading Russian centers for the production of components for rail transport. The region’s enterprises manufacture climate control systems, lighting lines, and interior and exterior finishing elements for metro rolling stock.

The Rostov region is among the largest suppliers of high-tech systems for modern metro trains. Handrails for passenger car salons are manufactured in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The Republic of Tatarstan has been supplying driver seats for many years that meet modern safety, ergonomics, and operational reliability requirements.

The Penza region is one of the main Russian centers for the production of braking resistors, while enterprises in the Yaroslavl region produce modern soundproofing materials for metro cars.

Thus, Moscow is not only the largest customer of modern urban rail transport but also one of the key centers for shaping industrial policy in transport engineering.

The metro upgrade program simultaneously contributes to strengthening the country’s technological independence, developing industry, and training qualified personnel. Each new train of the Moscow metro is the result of joint work by specialists from metropolitan enterprises and dozens of Russian manufacturers supplying key systems, equipment, and components.
