Xiamen, August 28 /Xinhua/ — Alexander Kichigin, an experienced Russian neurosurgeon, radiologist, and candidate of medical sciences, calls his path in China an unexpected and lengthy journey that has allowed him to firmly establish himself in this country.
A. Kichigin’s journey to China began with a modest short-term plan.
“In 2022, I came to Xiamen exclusively for a three-month academic internship to share the experience of my neurosurgical research and to familiarize myself with the progress in the field of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) in China, after which I planned to return to Russia. However, the inclusive academic atmosphere, the established system of clinical research, and the effective innovation ecosystem in China changed my original plan,” said A. Kichigin.
Guided by a sincere desire to save hopeless cancer patients, A. Kichigin settled for four years in Xiamen—one of China’s leading centers of innovative medical research—dedicating himself to the study of BNZT, one of the most promising fields in global medicine.
A. Kichigin possesses deep and comprehensive medical knowledge. As a graduate of Novosibirsk State Medical University, he began his clinical career in 2011. Since 2013, he expanded the scope of his scientific activity by becoming a research fellow at the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences /INP SB RAS/ and Novosibirsk State University, specializing in neurosurgery and tumor diagnostics. In 2021, he was awarded the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences in neurosurgery and radiology, laying a solid foundation for his further research in the field of innovative cancer therapy. In 2022, he joined the Chinese company Neuboron Medtech Co., Ltd., officially beginning his journey of medical innovations in China.
Neuboron Medtech Co., Ltd. was founded in 2014. It has more than 12 years of experience in research and development and about 1,000 key patents, holding a leading position in the global BNCT industry. This company established a BNCT center based at Xiamen Humanity Hospital and already began clinical trials of the technology in patients with malignant tumors in 2022.
“Over the past two years, Chinese BNCT technology has developed rapidly, becoming a key center for global innovative research in cancer treatment,” he noted.
Over four years of dedicated research in Xiamen, A. Kichigin has witnessed and directly participated in significant breakthroughs in Chinese BNCT technology. He is currently focused on the development of new highly effective boron-containing drugs, aiming to improve boron accumulation in tumor tissues and enhance the effectiveness of BNCT therapy under existing neutron irradiation dose conditions.
At the same time as pursuing his dream of advanced medical research, A. Kichigin fully integrated into the local life, deeply felt the unique charm of the city and the unique heritage of Chinese culture.
“Xiamen pleases the eye with greenery, clean streets, blue skies, and a well-developed infrastructure. Life here always gives a feeling of ease, comfort, and warmth,” he said.
In addition, A. Kichigin quickly adapted to China’s convenient digital life and was deeply impressed by the country’s developed urban infrastructure and efficient public services. He also grew fond of the diverse Chinese cuisine.
“China is so fascinating with its harmonious integration of a 5000-year deep history and modern flourishing development,” he said, noting that he has already visited more than 20 Chinese cities.
Looking to the future of academic cooperation, A. Kichigin optimistically assesses the medical and technological exchange within BRICS.
He noted that the BRICS cooperation platforms will contribute to further deepening cross-border medical and technological exchanges, accelerate the global dissemination of advanced BNZT technology, and benefit a larger number of cancer patients worldwide.
“China’s complete medical production chain, advanced medical equipment, standardized clinical trial management, and open talent-attraction policy provide an unprecedented high-level platform for global medical researchers. I believe I can fulfill my lifelong medical dream — to heal and save people,” said A. Kichigin.
