Starting from September 2, in Moscow Longevity Centers The psychological program “The Art of Family Relationships” is resuming. It is designed for older city residents and includes two series of seminars dedicated to family, love, and intimacy, as well as open lectures on current life issues. All sessions are held in person at the Moscow Longevity centers in various districts of the capital.
The program is led by clinical psychologist Elena Polyakova, a candidate of the International Psychoanalytical Association. Sessions are conducted in the format of a live dialogue without complex terms and medical diagnoses. Together with the specialist, participants analyze real-life situations, learn to better understand their feelings, cope with changes, and build relationships with loved ones in a new way.
The topic of relationships is very interesting to the older generation. In the spring, two psychology courses were held as part of the program at 38 Moscow longevity centers, attended by over 6,500 people.
“Family relationships change along with us: children grow up, familiar roles are restructured, new circumstances arise, and emotions and old resentments sometimes continue to affect the present. But it is never too late to learn to listen to and understand each other. In the fall, we are expecting participants in several programs at once: we will talk about how love is formed, why it is easy to be close to some people while with others distance arises, how to maintain warm relationships with adult children, cope with life changes, and find inner support. It is important for us to create a space where a person can calmly speak about what truly concerns them and find their own answers,” said Elena Polyakova.
The first cycle of the program “Love Across Generations” includes five consecutive meetings and is dedicated to relationships within the family, as well as life changes that a person faces in adulthood. Participants will analyze the causes of family crises, discuss how perceptions of marriage and role distribution change, learn about ways to cope with loss and adapt to changes. Separate meetings will be devoted to intergenerational scenarios: habits and behavior patterns that a person adopts from their family, often without even realizing it.
The seminars will be held at the Moscow Longevity centers “Dmitrovsky”, “Khovrino”, “Perovo-2”, “Altufyevsky”, “Filimonkovsky”, “Troitsk”, “Tsaritsyno” and “Marfino”. The schedule can be viewed at official project website.
Second cycle of the program “How We Love. The Art of Family Relationships” invites participants to delve deeper into how a person learns to love and build close relationships. Five meetings will be dedicated to loneliness and finding inner support, relationships with adult children and personal boundaries, the connection between emotional experiences and well-being, as well as forgiveness and gratitude. A complete list of centers, addresses, and seminar schedules is published on project website.
For senior citizens, they also conduct open lectures: they can be attended regardless of the two main cycles. Participants choose the meetings that interest them. The topics cover various situations people face in mature age: searching for new meanings after finishing a professional career, empty nest syndrome, relationships with grown children and elderly parents, long-term marriage, and family conflicts.
Important and complex topics will also be covered in the lectures: how to behave if a loved one faces addiction, why old grievances continue to affect emotional state, what causes constant anxiety and how to cope with it. Some sessions will be dedicated to the influence of childhood experiences on adult life, acceptance of age-related changes, coping with loss, and realizing the fragility of life. You can find out at which Moscow longevity centers the lectures are held, what topics are discussed, and when the upcoming meetings will take place on website.
Psychological lectures and seminars attract participants with completely different life experiences. The meetings are attended by those who are just beginning to build relationships with their adult children, as well as those who have been married for decades.
For those who want to get acquainted with the program topics before attending in-person meetings, a series of video clips with psychologist Elena Polyakova is available on the “Moscow Longevity” social media pages.
