PJSC “KAMAZ” and the manufacturing company “Moskommash” have developed the first prototype of a garbage truck based on the K5 generation chassis KAMAZ-53253. The model was created taking into account the expiration of the moratorium on weight control of special waste equipment in 2028 and fully complies with the requirements of Russian Federation legislation regarding permissible axle loads.
The basis of the new model is the KAMAZ-53253 (4×2) K5-generation two-axle chassis with a short wheelbase (3900 mm), specially developed for mounting municipal superstructures. With a total vehicle weight of 18 tons, the chassis has a load capacity of 11.84 tons. The vehicle is equipped with a KAMAZ engine producing 310 hp, a robotic transmission, and a modern comfortable low cab without a sleeping berth. The aluminum fuel tank with a capacity of 260 liters has a fuel intake heater for uninterrupted operation during the winter period. The pneumatic rear suspension combined with the spring front suspension and a sturdy frame provide the vehicle with a high reliability margin when working with heavy loads.
A garbage truck superstructure manufactured by ‘Moskommash’ with a useful body volume of 13.6 cubic meters is mounted on the chassis. The garbage truck is capable of efficiently compacting and transporting large volumes of MSW, fully remaining within the permitted weight parameters.
The new product will be presented to the general public at the “KAMAZ” booth during the specialized COMTRANS-2026 exhibition, which will be held from September 22 to 25 in Kazan. After that, the prototype will undergo final tests: engineers from the KAMAZ Scientific and Technical Center, together with specialists from Moskommash company, will evaluate the machine’s performance both during bench tests and in real working conditions. Thus, as part of preparations for lifting the moratorium on axle loads for garbage trucks, 30 units will be produced on the KAMAZ-53253 chassis, which will be sent to the fleets of leading regional MSW operators for trial operation.
Recall that from April 1, 2025, to March 1, 2028, a moratorium on weight and size control for garbage trucks is in effect in Russia. The exemption from inspections and fines for overloading applies to two-axle and three-axle special equipment used for transporting solid municipal waste. The three-year moratorium is designed to help regional operators systematically renew their fleets, and domestic enterprises to develop and master the production of equipment in demand in the municipal sector. Acting ahead of schedule, KAMAZ has actively joined this effort by creating a line of modern garbage trucks on the K5 generation chassis, which fully comply with strict regulations regarding permissible gross weight and axle loads.
