At the end of August, in three galleries of the association “Moscow Exhibition Halls”, subordinate to the capital’s To the Department of Culture, exhibitions dedicated to urban landscapes, book graphics, and academic painting will open.
“[A Walk] Along the Embankment”: Sergey Filitov’s Urban Landscape
Personal exhibition of Sergey Filitov, a member of the Union of Artists of Russia “[A Walk] on the Embankment” will be on display at the Bogorodskoe Gallery from August 27 to September 20. The exhibition will include more than 30 paintings dedicated to the Moscow embankments, as well as archival and contemporary photographs that allow one to learn about the history of the city’s shoreline.
Sergey Filitov’s painting continues the tradition of classical cityscape and simultaneously embodies tranquility and romance. Infinitely in love with depicting nature and working en plein air (Sergey Filitov often creates his paintings in one session — this is called alla prima), the artist is constantly in search of rare color solutions.
The exhibition, justifying its name, will present a special form of walking along the city’s embankments — through the prism of contemporary art, archival and modern photographs, supplemented by historical notes. This format will allow the viewer not only to understand the context of the development of Moscow’s coastline, but also to see the architectural reflection of the cultural environment.
The main idea of the exhibition is to draw the viewers’ attention to the transformation of the embankment, reflecting the unique historical experience of the capital. The exhibition offers a new perspective on familiar city routes: to see them as a space where engineering history meets the water element.
Contemporary and friend of the Oberiuts: “Alisa Poret. Wonderland”
From August 27 to October 11, an exhibition will be held at the “Na Shabolovke” gallery “Alisa Poret. Wonderland”, dedicated to the work of the Soviet artist, graphic designer, and illustrator.
Alisa Poret, one of the most brilliant students of Pavel Filonov and Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, possessed a rare gift of seeing poetry in the everyday and transforming the mundane into art.
An important part of Alisa Poret’s creative journey was the creation of illustrations for fairy tale children’s books. The starting point was her work at the Academia publishing house, where the artist illustrated classic works. Since 1928, she collaborated with the Leningrad branch of the State Children’s Publishing House — it was here that her unique artistic language began to unfold.
Having rethought the avant-garde methods of her teachers (the strict analytical method, the “crafted” nature of each element), Alisa Poret originally complemented the texts of the works with parallel visual stories. Thus was born her unique fairy-tale universe, where characters live according to the laws of free imagination, and familiar plots acquire a new intonation.
The exhibition organizers paid special attention to the works that vividly demonstrated Alisa Poret’s ingenuity as a book illustrator.
An important aspect of the artist’s work became the turn to the world of absurdity and play, largely shaped under the influence of the Oberiuts, with whom she worked in the editorial offices of the children’s magazines “Chizh” and “Yozh,” and especially Daniil Kharms.
Communication with Kharms revealed the artist’s ability to embody the paradoxical and fantastic without losing subtle poetry. The poet’s memory is honored by Alisa Poret’s work on the illustrations for the book “Mysterious Pictures,” as well as a small foreword to it.
After the Great Patriotic War, Alisa Poret moved to Moscow, where she continued to collaborate with children’s publishers. In particular, she illustrated the first Russian edition of the book about Winnie-the-Pooh by the English writer Alan Alexander Milne.
Still life, landscape, portrait
From August 28 to September 20, visitors to the “Tushino” gallery will have an exhibition of graduates from the Faculty of Additional Professional Education of the Moscow State Academic Art Institute named after V.I. Surikov and their teacher Nikolai Dubovik. “From Still Life to Landscape and Portrait”.
The exhibition will bring together works in three genres, executed in various painting styles — from academic realism to impressionism and neo-primitivism.
Having studied the fundamentals of academic drawing and realistic painting, each graduate finds their own creative path and experiments with different styles. The artists explore various themes: the beauty of nature, the psychology of portraiture, genre scenes, philosophical reflections. In some works, the exhibition participants address the themes of patriotism and heroism. Despite the diversity of genres—landscape, still life, and portrait—the works share common features: carefully considered composition, plasticity of forms, and expressive color, creating a sense of beauty and harmony.
The idea of the exhibition is to show how one genre smoothly transitions into another, creating a cohesive picture. Still lifes, landscapes, and portraits will be presented in a single space, allowing the viewer to trace the connections between genres and see how each complements the overall artistic concept.
