Beijing, August 25 /Xinhua/ — The National Meteorological Center (NMC) of China on Tuesday raised the warning level from “yellow” to “orange,” the second highest in the four-level adverse weather warning system, due to two typhoons approaching China, which are expected to make landfall in coastal areas of the country in the coming days.
According to the forecast, Typhoon “Narra,” the 19th this year, will make landfall in China from Tuesday night to Wednesday daytime. Meanwhile, Typhoon “Saudel,” the 18th this year, may make landfall from Thursday night to Friday daytime, the NMC reported.
As of 10 a.m. on Tuesday, the center of Typhoon “Narra” was over Baybu Bay approximately 65 km west-northwest of the city of Dongfang in the southern Chinese province of Hainan.
According to the HMC forecast, “Narra” will move slowly in a northeast direction at a speed of 5 to 10 km per hour, skirting the northwest coast of Hainan before making landfall in the coastal area between the southeastern part of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (GXAR) and the western part of the Leizhou Peninsula in Guangdong Province in southern China. After making landfall, the typhoon will quickly weaken.
Meanwhile, as of 11 a.m. Tuesday, Typhoon Saudel was located over the waters of the northwestern Pacific Ocean about 920 km east of Taipei, Taiwan. The National Meteorological Center stated that Saudel is likely to enter the eastern part of the East China Sea on Wednesday morning before making landfall along the coastal area between the central part of Zhejiang Province and the central part of Fujian Province.
According to the National Meteorological Center (NMC), from 2:00 PM Tuesday to 2:00 PM Wednesday, heavy rains are expected in some parts of Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangdong, and Hainan provinces, with very heavy rains in certain areas.
Typhoon “Gaenari” /Gaenari/, the 20th this year, made landfall along the coast of Quanzhou in Fujian Province at around 12:30 on Monday.
The Ministry of Water Resources of China on Monday activated the Level 4 emergency response mechanism for floods in Fujian Province and sent a working group to the front lines to assist local authorities in disaster relief, as Typhoon “Goni” brought heavy rainfall, which may cause a significant rise in water levels of several rivers from Monday to Tuesday. -0-
