On the 130th anniversary of Faina Ranevskaya’s birth, an exhibition “Quotes by Ranevskaya and about Ranevskaya” will open opposite house 23 on Arbat Street. Its organizer and curator is the Moscow Directorate of Mass Events, subordinate to the city Department of Culture. The preparation of the exhibition also involved the Mossovet Theatre, Soyuzmultfilm, Lenfilm and Mosfilm studios. The exhibition will be presented as part of the ‘Night of Cinema’ event.
Starting August 27, visitors will be able to see Faina Ranevskaya through the eyes of her contemporaries, among whom are Sergey Yursky, Alexander Vasilyev, Lev Losev, Pavel Antokolsky, and other actors, directors, teachers, and theater figures.
A separate section of the project is dedicated to the films of Faina Ranevskaya, revealing the power of the actress’s talent. Visitors will see footage from films starting in the early 1930s (“Puff,” “The Foundling”) to the wartime and postwar periods (“Dream,” “Spring,” “Cinderella”). In addition, the exhibition will reflect the actress’s special relationship with the works of Alexander Pushkin, whose poetry inspired her.
The biography of Faina Ranevskaya resembles a film script. The future actress was born into the family of a prosperous first guild merchant, owner of his own steamboat, and spent her childhood in Taganrog. From a young age, her family noticed her special emotionality, which grew into a love for the theater, which she was introduced to as a gymnasium student. After the revolution, the actress’s family emigrated to Prague.
Faina Ranevskaya was left alone in Russia, took a pseudonym that became her trademark, and began working on stage. After a decade of performing in provincial theaters, she moved to Moscow, where she continued acting in theater and also started appearing in films. The actress is known as the author of numerous aphorisms and witty remarks.
The exhibition will present the personality of Faina Ranevskaya from a new perspective. Some footage will be shown to the general public for the first time.
Entry to the exhibition is free. It can be viewed until September 27.
