On the platform “Active Citizen — for Children” has ended survey, in which participants chose a name for the Mexican milk snake baby. It was born at the end of May in Moscow Zoo, subordinate to the metropolitan Department of Culture.
Experts proposed five name options related to the history and culture of Mexico — the homeland of this rare species of reptiles. The young Muscovites had to determine which one would suit the new inhabitant of the zoo best.
The winner of the poll was the option Theo, which received support from 47 percent of participants. This name refers to the ancient city of Teotihuacan in central Mexico, where the famous Temple of the Feathered Serpent, built between 150 and 200 AD, is located.
In second place was the name Olmec — it received 18 percent of the votes. It is dedicated to the oldest Mexican civilization, in whose culture the images of the Feathered Serpent first appeared. The third place was taken by the name Chalchi (16 percent of the votes), belonging to the Aztec goddess of water. In the art of Teotihuacan, the image of the Feathered Serpent was often associated with the water element.
The names Quetzal and Mixteca received 11 and nine percent of the votes respectively. The first refers to the sacred bird and deity Quetzalcoatl, the second to a people from southern Mexico whose territory overlaps with the range of the Mexican two-colored snake.
The birth of a Mexican two-colored snake baby is a big event for the Moscow Zoo. This species rarely reproduces in captivity and is considered one of the most difficult to breed. Zoo specialists have created special conditions for the reptiles: the temperature in the terrarium is maintained between 26 and 40 degrees in different zones, and the layer of dense soil is at least 15 centimeters, because the snake likes to bury itself.
The newborn female snake has become a Muscovite already in the third generation: her parents were also born in the capital’s zoo. Currently, the baby’s body length is about 20–25 centimeters, and in adulthood, it can reach 120 centimeters. The species got its name due to its characteristic coloration: a dark back with a purple sheen and a light belly. This species is non-venomous and leads a secretive lifestyle.
