In Moscow Drama Theatre named after N.V. Gogol plans for the 102nd season were announced. During the troupe gathering, artistic director Anton Yakovlev spoke about new performances and tours.
Premieres
The first premiere of the season will be the play “Silence Then”. Anton Yakovlev will turn to the play by American writer and screenwriter Vinny Delmar. The story is complicated—and very touching: it all begins when the elderly couple Lucy and Barclay Cooper announce to their five adult children that they are no longer able to maintain their huge house and ask for help. However, the children are in no hurry to deal with the problem and eventually decide that it is easier to separate the parents, who have lived together for half a century: the father will go to California with one of the daughters, and the mother will stay in New York with the son. The performances will take place on September 8 and 9.
The next premiere is scheduled for October 10; it will be “An Ordinary Miracle” based on the play by Evgeny Schwartz. The story about a bear transformed into a man and the princess in love with him is directed by Pavel Parkhomenko. This is his second work at the N.V. Gogol Theatre — in 2023, a performance premiered on the small stage “Resurrection” based on the novel of the same name by Leo Tolstoy. The current premiere will be dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the playwright’s birth.
At the beginning of December, viewers can look forward to Anton Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard” staged by Anton Yakovlev.
“I approached Chekhov’s dramaturgy very gradually, previously directing only his prose: my play ‘The Duel’ has been running for 16 years at the Moscow Art Theatre named after A.P. Chekhov, and I have also turned to his novella ‘A Hunting Drama’ at the Et Cetera Theatre. It seems to me that only a mature, experienced director should tackle Chekhov. He is a deceptively simple author who does not tolerate straightforward, banal interpretations. His plays are always veiled texts with hidden motivations. His last play ‘The Cherry Orchard,’ in my opinion, is the best. Moreover, it is one of the first dramatic works with elements not just of tragic farce, but even absurdism,” Anton Yakovlev said.
The second half of the season will begin with the premiere of the play “The Marriage” based on the work of Nikolai Gogol; details will be announced later. In addition, director David Papava, known for his collaboration with Gabriel Garcia Marquez on the staging of the book “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” will begin rehearsals for a new production.
On the small stage, they will show the play “Miss Julie” by Swedish playwright August Strindberg, written in 1888. The plot centers on the daughter of a count, who suffers because of her love for a simple valet.

In October, the troupe will go to the 20th International Festival of Theaters of Near and Distant Foreign Countries “Compatriots,” where it will also present “Crime and Punishment.”
