The city of Kaifeng in Henan Province served as the “ancient capital of eight dynasties” on the banks of the Huai River and was inseparably connected with water for millennia. In distant times, Kaifeng reached unprecedented prosperity, becoming “the richest city under Heaven,” thanks to the Bianshui water canal. But it was also repeatedly buried under the floods of the Huai River, being destroyed and rebuilt anew, experiencing rises and falls.
Today, the “culture of the Song dynasty,” which incorporated the heritage of the Han and Tang dynasties and influenced the subsequent Ming and Qing dynasties, continues to flourish on the streets and in the alleys of Kaifeng. This profound tradition, having survived millennia, not only shapes the elegant and unhurried cultural appearance of the city but also serves as a source of energy for qualitative development.
