Caring for an elderly or limited-mobility person involves not only boundless patience and love but also complex technical skills that require specialized knowledge. In Moscow, a unique educational infrastructure has been established where qualified specialists teach relatives safe and proper care for their loved ones.

Confidence and professional care

For most people, caring for an elderly or less mobile relative becomes stressful primarily due to a lack of confidence in their abilities. How not to harm a loved one or oneself, how to properly organize the space to avoid injuries, how not to burn out during the caregiving process—the capital’s specialists in the “Family Care School” project and the simulation center for professional care skills training teach this today.

For more than four years now, based at the Institute of Continuing Professional Education for employees social sphere of the city of Moscow the project is operating “School of Kinship Care”. Participants undergo free training and acquire the necessary skills for professional care of loved ones.

Project specialists explain how to organize a safe space for an elderly relative, how to care for a person with dementia, and how to avoid emotional burnout during the caregiving process. Muscovites have access to online courses and an electronic knowledge base on long-term care. To practice skills in real life, one can attend in-person sessions in simulation rooms and two-day intensives on weekends.

“In addition, specialists provide psychological assistance to project participants during thematic sessions with a professional psychologist and at support group meetings. During such events, relatives discuss the difficulties they face in caring for their loved ones, exchange experiences, and receive emotional support. Over the four years of the project’s existence, more than seven thousand city residents have acquired caregiving skills for their loved ones,” noted Darya Muzyka, manager of the ‘School of Family Care’ project.

Training and professional development

Professional care training can also be completed at simulation center. Three years ago, it opened based on the Scientific and Practical Gerontopsychiatric Center Department of Labor and Social Protection of the Population of the City of Moscow.

The center has organized five thematic zones where, using high-tech simulators and mannequins, they teach safe movement for people with limited mobility and the elderly, work with functional beds, lifts, verticalizers, and wheelchairs, the organization of barrier-free spaces, as well as injury prevention.

More than 30 educational programs are available to listeners. Since the simulation center began operating, over 17 thousand people have been trained there — both ordinary citizens and social sector employees.

“For social protection specialists, this is a mandatory professional development course that ensures a unified Moscow standard of quality care. As a result, the entire system operates smoothly: relatives confidently care for and look after their loved ones, while social sector specialists provide a high level of assistance to those who are alone,” emphasized Elena Voronova, Deputy Director of the Scientific and Practical Gerontopsychiatric Center of the Department of Labor and Social Protection of the Population of the City of Moscow.

Work is being carried out within the framework of the federal project “Senior Generation” (national project “Family”), aimed at improving the quality of life for elderly Muscovites. More details about Russia’s national projects and the capital’s contribution can be found at special page.
