Specialists at Moscow Hospital No. 31 named after Academician G.M. Saveleva performed hip joint endoprosthetics for the first time in Russia using a fully autonomous robotic system. The technology allows for the implantation of an endoprosthesis with high precision, taking into account the individual’s anatomical features. This was reported by Anastasia Rakova, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Social Development.

“Moscow is consistently implementing modern technologies in healthcare so that the residents of the capital can receive world-class medical care. For example, robot-assisted surgery has already become a common practice in city hospitals. Over the past five years, the number of such operations has increased more than fourfold. Recently, the doctors at the hospital named after Academician G.M. Saveleva were the first in the country to apply a fully autonomous robotic system for hip joint endoprosthetics. This allowed the operation to be performed taking into account the anatomical features of patients. At the same time, the robot-surgeon did not replace the doctor but acted as a highly precise assistant. Our specialists successfully performed such operations on two people, who are now recovering and already able to move independently. The introduction of this technology opens a new stage in the development of robotic surgery in traumatology and orthopedics. In total, by the end of the year, we plan to perform about a thousand surgeries for endoprosthetics of large joints using various robot surgeons,” Anastasia Rakova noted.

Hip joint endoprosthetics is one of the effective treatment methods for people with severe diseases and consequences of joint injuries. The surgery helps to get rid of chronic pain, restore mobility, and return a person to their usual quality of life.

To perform such an intervention, city surgeons used the fully autonomous robotic system Cuvis Hip — a new generation of robotic complexes for joint endoprosthetics. The treatment process began with detailed diagnostics. Patients underwent computed tomography of the joints, based on the scans three-dimensional models were constructed, and then an individual surgical intervention plan was developed. Digital planning allowed doctors to pre-calculate the optimal location of the endoprosthesis and determine the amount of work needed with the bone tissue.

Then the robot started working. It helped the surgeon prepare the bone bed: it treated the bone surface and removed growths, following predetermined parameters. This method allows for the prosthesis to be installed as accurately as possible, taking into account the anatomical features of the person. At the same time, the doctors maintained full control of the process and independently made all clinical decisions. The first two operations, conducted with the support of a specialist from South Korea, lasted approximately one and a half hours each.

The use of an autonomous robotic system has become an important milestone in the development of the Moscow trauma and orthopedic service. The introduction of advanced technologies allows city doctors to utilize the best global practices and achieve more predictable and high-quality treatment outcomes.
