The tunnel boring machine (TBM) “Liliya” has started moving under the Bolshoy Stroginsky backwater. Excavation beneath the water body is carried out strictly in accordance with the design profile. From the top of the tunnel to the bottom, the depth consists of no less than 23.5 meters of soil, and the natural water thickness does not exceed 9.5 meters,” noted Vladimir Efimov.
The soils along the path of the EPB shield are heterogeneous: sand and clay alternate with gravel and dense limestone. Such variations create additional engineering challenges. Precise adjustment of the shield’s technological modes allows overcoming them.
The TBM “Lily” began tunneling in January. Considering the complex hydrogeological conditions at the site, a set of preventive and protective measures has been implemented. In particular, a special emergency action protocol has been developed, which provides for rapid stabilization and reliable waterproofing of the tunnel face in case of excess water. An extended emergency supply of materials and equipment is also constantly maintained on the construction site. There are 220 specialists involved in the section.
