Xiamen, August 16 /Xinhua/ — On Gulangyu Island in the city of Xiamen /Fujian Province, East China/ on Saturday evening, a concert of the Russian Academic Orchestra of the Novosibirsk State Philharmonic took place.
This is one of the orchestra’s performances in China during its nearly century-long history, which took place during its debut tour in the country.
The orchestra presented four quintessentially Russian folk instruments – the balalaika, domra, gusli, and bayan. The orchestra was conducted by the Honored Artist of the Russian Federation Rustam Dil’mukhametov.
Of particular interest was the joint performance of the famous musical piece “Yellow River” with the Chinese pianist Liu Xingcheng, a professor at the Central Conservatory of China.
Viewers noted that the timbres of the Russian folk instruments blended amazingly organically with the piano part, creating a harmonious fusion of Eastern softness and Russian depth.
One of the attending musician-teachers, He Yixin, emphasized that the orchestra was not simply reproducing ancient melodies, but through modern arrangements and sincere emotionality, was giving them new life.
Besides “Yellow River Concerto,” the concert program included such well-known Chinese and Russian compositions as “Flowers are Beautiful and the Moon is Full,” “The Sun Illuminates Tashkurgan,” “Valenki,” and “Mar, Dyandya.” The event once again confirmed that music knows no national borders.
