Urumqi, August 16 /Xinhua/ — At the Sister Cities Cooperation and Development Conference held on Saturday in the county-level city of Kashgar in the eponymous prefecture of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), Northwest China, a number of cooperation achievements were reached between the prefecture and countries of Central and South Asia.
During the event, Merket County of Kashgar Prefecture and Bektemir District of Tashkent city, the capital of Uzbekistan, signed a protocol of intent to establish sister city relations. Thus, at present, Kashgar Prefecture has 9 overseas sister cities, with 14 such documents signed.
In addition, documents on cooperation in the fields of education and medical services were also signed at the conference. Kashgar University concluded a cooperation agreement with Osh State University /Kyrgyzstan/ and signed a memorandum of cooperation with Lahore University of Management Sciences /Pakistan/. Within the framework of inter-university cooperation, regular exchanges will be conducted, such as mutual visits of teachers and students, joint scientific research, academic discussions, and joint training of specialists.
The First People’s Hospital of Kashgar Prefecture and the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center of Urology of Uzbekistan have signed a memorandum of friendly cooperation, according to which the parties intend to create a platform for remote consultations, promote mutual visits and training of medical personnel, as well as facilitate joint study and discussion of complex clinical cases.
Mubarak Mugeti, Deputy Head of the Foreign Affairs Office of the People’s Government of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Deputy Chairman of the Xinjiang People’s Society for Friendship with Foreign Countries, expressed at the conference the hope that Kashgar Prefecture will be able to fully utilize the platform of international sister cities, continue to expand external exchanges, and solidly promote comprehensive cooperation in humanitarian, educational, medical, trade, economic, and other fields.
