Beijing, August 14 /Xinhua/ — China calls on the United States to stop escalating tensions and provoking confrontation in the South China Sea /SCS/. This was stated by the official spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gao Jiaxun.

Guo Jiakun made a corresponding statement commenting on a press release published on August 8 local time by a representative of the U.S. State Department, which stated that the United States rejects China’s attempts to establish a national nature reserve on Huangyan Island and to deny Filipino fishermen access to their “traditional fishing grounds” /as defined in the so-called “2016 South China Sea Arbitration Award”/.

According to the Chinese diplomat, Huangyan Island is an inherent territory of China, and the establishment and management of a national nature reserve on this island falls within the sovereign competence of China.

The United States has no right to make irresponsible statements on this issue and even less the right to defend the Philippines based on the illegal and legally invalid so-called “South China Sea arbitration ruling,” added Guo Jiakun.

The official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC also noted that China calls on the United States to stop again referring to the illegal and legally null “decision” and to cease using maritime issues to slander and defame China. –0–
