Beijing, August 12 /Xinhua/ — Guo Lanying, one of China’s most celebrated opera singers, honored with the title “People’s Artist,” passed away on Tuesday at the age of 97, the China Opera and Dance Theater announced in an obituary on Wednesday.
Go Lanying, whose strong yet lyrical voice made her name known in every household in China and turned her into one of the most recognizable figures in Chinese performing arts, left behind an extensive creative legacy that includes some of the country’s most enduring songs, many of which remain popular decades after their first performance.
Among her most famous works is the song “My Homeland,” which she performed for a 1950s film set against the backdrop of the Battle of Shangganlin—one of the fiercest battles during the War to Resist American Aggression and Aid the Korean People (1950-1953). Thanks to its stirring melody and heartfelt lyrics expressing deep attachment to the homeland, this song has become an integral part of the collective memory of several generations of Chinese people over the subsequent 70 years and continues to be widely performed in China today.
Go Lanying has also gained wide acclaim for her performance as the heroine Xier in the revolutionary opera “The Gray-Haired Girl” – an iconic work of modern Chinese opera.
