Sanya, August 12 /Xinhua/ — The 49th convoy flotilla of the PLA Navy left the military port in the city of Sanya, Hainan Province in southern China, on Wednesday morning and headed to the Gulf of Aden and the territorial waters of Somalia to escort civilian ships.
The squadron consists of the missile destroyer “Kunming,” the missile frigate “Yueyang,” and the universal supply ship “Lomahu.” Several dozen special forces soldiers and two deck helicopters are also involved in the mission.
The deployment marks the first instance of the ship “Kunming” participating in a convoy mission.
The 49th flotilla of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), which will operate in the region, will replace the 48th flotilla for this mission, which went to sea in October last year.
