Beijing, August 7 /Xinhua/ — Japanese authorities must heed the call of the people to fulfill their international legal obligations to renounce the acquisition, production, possession, and dissemination of nuclear weapons, and also stop playing with fire on the issue of nuclear weapons, said Lin Jian, an official spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Friday.
The Chinese diplomat made this statement in response to a media question about a recent survey conducted by the Japanese Association for Public Opinion Research.
According to this survey, 76 percent of Japan’s residents support adherence to the three non-nuclear principles: renouncing possession of nuclear weapons, production of nuclear weapons, and import of nuclear weapons into Japan. The survey also showed that 77 percent of respondents believe that Japan should not pursue “joint use of nuclear weapons” – a program under which the United States could station nuclear weapons on Japanese territory. -0-
