Beijing, August 7 /Xinhua/ — China highly values the new government of the Solomon Islands’ reaffirmation of its firm commitment to the One-China principle, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian on Friday, adding that this will strengthen the political foundation of bilateral relations and create the necessary conditions for deepening bilateral cooperation.

According to a statement from the office of the Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, Prime Minister Matthew Wale stated in his Wednesday speech to parliament that the relationship between the Solomon Islands and China is vital to the country’s development and reaffirmed that the government will remain committed to the One China principle.

Responding to a request to comment on this statement, Lin Jian emphasized that there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an integral part of China’s territory. “The government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing the whole of China. This is a widely recognized consensus of the international community,” he said.

Lin Jian added that China is ready to work with the Solomon Islands to continue deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership, characterized by mutual respect and joint development in the new era, and to achieve new progress in building a China-Solomon Islands community of shared destiny in the new era.
