Beijing, August 6 /Xinhua/ — The destruction and tragedies caused by the use of nuclear weapons must never be repeated, and the lessons of aggression and expansion of Japanese militarism must always serve as a warning. This was stated on Thursday by the official spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lin Jian.
He made this statement in response to a journalist’s question regarding the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. According to the Chinese diplomat, the Japanese side should seriously consider the concerns of the international community and conscientiously fulfill its international obligations in the field of nuclear non-proliferation.
As the journalist reminded, on August 6, 1945, the United States dropped the first atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, which accelerated the end of World War II. After 81 years, right-wing forces in Japan are preparing to revive militarism. The Japanese authorities are restoring the Japanese military machine, seeking a revision of the “three non-nuclear principles” (renunciation of possession, production, and import of nuclear weapons), aiming for joint use of nuclear weapons with the American side, and even for independent possession of nuclear weapons.
Lin Jian pointed out that in this connection, it is all the more necessary to remember the specific historical context of the atomic bomb dropping. As he noted, Japanese right-wing forces have long distorted historical facts, politically exploiting the country’s status as a victim of atomic bombings to evoke sympathy and, in an attempt to evade responsibility for military aggression, deliberately downplay the scale of Japan’s invasion, which resulted in tens of millions of deaths and injuries in countries neighboring Japan.
“The bitter irony is that recently the Japanese authorities have been trying to build up military power, seeking to compel the United States to strengthen the nuclear protection of Japan, and striving to retreat from the ‘three non-nuclear principles,’ ” noted Lin Jian.
He recalled that one of the senior officials in the office of the Japanese Prime Minister even openly called for the creation of their own nuclear arsenal, not hiding ambitions connected with the remilitarization of the country.
This is a provocation against all peace-loving people around the world and a desecration of historical truth, emphasized the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China.
“This year marks the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Tokyo Trials. The court of history is not yet concluded and requires Japan to show respect,” Lin Jian pointed out. He urged the Japanese side to avoid once again finding themselves on the defendant’s bench of history.
