Beijing, August 4 /Xinhua/ — The volume of China’s artificial intelligence (AI) industry is expected to exceed 1.2 trillion yuan (about 176.7 billion US dollars) in 2025, which is 40 percent higher than the previous year, according to estimates by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a research institute under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the PRC.

As of June 2026, China has more than 6,600 companies in the AI sector, accounting for 15 percent of the total number of such companies worldwide. The country has developed a comprehensive AI industrial system covering basic infrastructure, models and platforms, as well as industry applications, CAICT reported.

In 2025, the industry-specific applications segment accounted for 55% of the entire AI industry chain, basic infrastructure for 38%, and the models and platforms segment for 7%.

The AI industry is largely concentrated in several regions: Beijing, Shanghai, as well as the provinces of Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Shandong account for more than 80 percent of the nationwide volume, noted the academy.

Large AI models, AI agents, and AI chips are rapidly evolving, with AI products becoming increasingly diverse and their applications expanding in traditional sectors of the economy.

CAICT led the development of two industry standards concerning the definition of the AI sector and the identification of companies in this field, to ensure unified standards for industry statistics, policy development, and business practices.

China will continue to promote the “AI Plus” initiative with the aim of facilitating a broad and deep integration of artificial intelligence into various sectors and areas of the economy and society. -0-
