Beijing, August 4 /Xinhua/ — China has released the “Action Plan to Strengthen the Prevention of Geological Disasters Nationwide,” developed for the period of the 15th Five-Year Plan /2026-2030/, focusing on building grassroots-level response capacity, according to a document published on Tuesday.
The plan published by the Ministry of Natural Resources of China provides for the relocation of 50,000 households from high-risk areas, the organization of engineering works at more than 4,200 sites vulnerable to geological disasters, as well as the elimination of safety threats at more than 6,100 sites.
It also contains a call to intensify work on risk assessment, the development of monitoring systems and early warning under changing climate conditions. Special attention is given to studying the mechanisms of disasters caused by extreme precipitation, sharp temperature fluctuations, and sudden shifts from drought to flooding.
Over the next five years, China plans to create an integrated national information platform on geological disasters and improve coordination and interaction between national and provincial systems, using big data, artificial intelligence models, and other new technologies.
Due to the complex terrain, diverse geological conditions, active tectonic movements, and increasing frequency of extreme weather events, China still remains a country extremely vulnerable to geological disasters.
According to the agency, by the end of 2025, nearly 280 thousand potential geological disaster sites threatening the safety of more than 11 million people were identified throughout the country. -0-
