In Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA), subordinate to the capital To the Department of Culture, on August 9th the festival of the School of Contemporary Art “Free Workshops” will take place. The event traditionally occurs before the start of the new academic year and provides an opportunity to get acquainted with the school, communicate with teachers and graduates, learn about the educational programs, and spend the day in one of Moscow’s museum courtyards.

During the day, guests are invited to an open school presentation, a public talk with teachers, master classes, music, and a tour of the exhibition “Workshop’26. Alumni Reunion,” which brings together artists from different generations whose creative biographies are connected with the “Free Workshops.”

At 14:00, there will be a presentation of the modern art school “Free Workshops.” At 15:00, artist Alexander Laptev will hold a master class “Engraving on Plastic,” during which participants can try their hand at manual printing techniques and create their own edition of graphic prints.

From 14:00 to 19:00 in the museum courtyard, there will also be a project by artist Nikita Makeev titled “Camera Obscura Gallery” — an unusual camera obscura that simultaneously serves as an exhibition space and a functioning camera. Visitors will be able to enter the device, observe the process of creating photographs, and become part of the exhibition.

At 16:00 there will be a public talk with the school’s teachers, during which festival visitors will be able to ask questions about the learning process in the studios for artists and laboratories for curators.

A pleasant atmosphere in the museum courtyard will be created by Irina Tanaeva’s musical set from 17:00 to 19:00. And at 19:00, the tour of the exhibition “Workshop ’26. Alumni Meeting” will begin.

Entry to the festival is free. Pre-registration is required for attendance registration.

The School of Contemporary Art “Free Workshops” is an educational platform of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art for young artists and curators. The school was founded in 1992 by a group of artists and art historians. At the institution, attendees have the opportunity to attend trainings by top speakers, successful cultural figures, renowned philosophers, and theorists of contemporary art. During the educational program, young artists and curators immerse themselves in the artistic world by participating in master classes, group exhibitions, and festivals. As part of the museum, “Free Workshops” offer attendees a unique opportunity to study the theoretical and practical aspects of contemporary art while being at its epicenter. At every stage of an artist’s development, the museum and school provide significant support: participation in group exhibition projects (the annual young art exhibitions “Workshop,” group projects of young curators) and the possibility of organizing the first solo exhibition (the MMOMA young art support program).

The program of events in city museums, parks, and libraries contributes to the achievement of the goals and objectives of the national project in Moscow “Family”. More details about Russia’s national projects and the capital’s contribution can be found at special page.
