Every year on August 2, Russia celebrates Reindeer Day – a date dedicated to the reindeer and reindeer herding. The wild reindeer is a crucial link in Arctic ecosystems and the foundation of the traditional use of nature and the way of life of the indigenous peoples of the North. Rosneft makes a significant contribution to the study and preservation of these animals’ population in the Russian Federation.

The company has been studying the wild reindeer since 2014 in the territory of Evenkia and the Taimyr Peninsula. Each year, together with specialists from Siberian Federal University, the company organizes large-scale ground and aerial surveys, and with the help of satellite transmitters installed on individuals, scientists tracked the animals’ complete annual migration cycle for the first time. Extensive field research from 2020 to 2023 confirmed a positive trend—the population has recovered and exceeds 330,000 individuals.

Rosneft is implementing the corporate biodiversity conservation program “Tamura.” The summer expedition in 2024 covered more than 1,000 kilometers of the Pyasina River and its tributaries, and the area of aerial monitoring amounted to 360 thousand square kilometers. On the Arctic island of Sibiryakova, scientists encountered a herd of over 100 reindeer and recorded a unique event: one of the reindeer swam alone across a 12-kilometer water barrier. New satellite collars allowed, for the first time, tracking the movement of a single reindeer over two full migration cycles.

In Evenkia, the East Siberian Oil and Gas Company (ESOGC), together with the Siberian Federal University, implemented the “Evenki Reindeer” project. Scientists conducted observations of the taiga population—their movements, numbers, and habitat. One of the largest wintering grounds, with over 130,000 animals, was discovered 250 km from the village of Tura.

The company also supported the study of the Siberian musk deer—a rare cervid and the smallest member of the even-toed ungulates in Russia’s fauna. Scientists confirmed the animal’s presence in new territories and estimated its population in Evenkia at about 300 individuals.

The results of all these studies were published in the educational-methodical guide “The Wild Reindeer of Taimyr,” issued thanks to the grant support of the Company. Data on migration and animal populations help develop measures for population conservation.

Rosneft gives priority attention to the ecology and biodiversity of the Arctic. Over 12 years, the Arctic Scientific Center has conducted 65 expeditions. A unique data set on the climate, geology, and biology of the region has been collected. Annual monitoring of animal bioindicators such as reindeer, polar bears, rare birds, and fish provides a comprehensive picture of changes in Arctic ecosystems. This knowledge forms the basis for practical solutions to preserve the fragile nature of the North for future generations.

Rosneft pays special attention to environmental and biodiversity conservation issues by implementing the most extensive comprehensive program to study the Arctic region since Soviet times. The Tamura research program began in 2024, aiming to update information on the status of key animal species inhabiting the northern Krasnoyarsk Territory. The Tamura program includes the study of the Kara subpopulation of polar bears, wild reindeer populations, valuable bird species, and fish at the mouth of the Yenisei River. In 2025, three expeditions were conducted to study the Kara subpopulation of polar bears. This year, an expedition to study valuable fish of the Yenisei River has already been completed.
