Hohhot, August 2 /Xinhua/ — According to an investigation report published on Sunday, 62 people have been held accountable for the explosion at a rolled sheet metal plant in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region /Northern China/ that occurred in January. As a result of the incident, 10 people died and another 84 were injured.
The report from the regional emergency department states that the explosion occurred on January 18 at 15:01 at the sheet rolling plant of Baogang United Steel in the city of Baotou. The incident was classified as a “workplace emergency related to safety responsibility.” The direct cause of the accident was prolonged corrosion and damage to a spherical pressured tank.
The damage ultimately led to the rupture of the tank wall, resulting in a leak of the contents and a subsequent explosion.
Seven factory employees were arrested on suspicion of committing criminal offenses. Another six were advised to contact judicial authorities for further investigation, the report says.
Four companies involved in the accident received administrative penalties, and officials and organizations at the city and district levels were instructed to submit written self-criticisms to higher authorities.
