Beijing, August 1 /Xinhua/ — The Southern Theater Command of the People’s Liberation Army of China (PLASouth T.C.) conducted joint exercises on Saturday involving naval and air forces, focused on a series of realistic combat missions in the territorial waters and airspace near the Chinese island of Huangyan Island and adjacent areas.

The command statement notes that the corresponding tasks included reconnaissance and early warning, patrolling for deterrence, control over maritime and airspace, as well as joint strikes.

During the exercises, the skills of coordination between the naval and air forces, the capabilities for operational support, and the achievement of victory based on a systematic approach were effectively tested, according to the statement.

The statement emphasizes that Huangyan Island is an integral part of China’s territory, and that the delimitation of the so-called “baselines of territorial waters” in the Huangyan Island area conducted by the Philippines is illegal and invalid.

The forces of the PLA’s South Western Theatre Command will remain in a state of heightened combat readiness at all times and will resolutely defend China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, the statement said. -0-
