UN, July 30 /Xinhua/ — The UN Security Council /SC/ on Thursday held the first preliminary vote on candidates for the post of the next Secretary-General of the organization.
“The first round of the preliminary voting has taken place,” said Zenon Ngai Mukongo, the permanent representative of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to the UN, whose country chairs the UN Security Council in July.
“Candidates will be notified of the results through the permanent representatives of the member states that nominated them. The President of the UN General Assembly will also be informed that the preliminary voting has been conducted,” the diplomat told journalists after the secret ballot.
Based on preliminary votes, the Security Council selects a candidate for the post of UN Secretary-General to recommend for appointment to the UN General Assembly.
The DRC Permanent Representative clarified that the ballots included the names of all seven candidates, but did not disclose the results.
The preliminary votes in the UN Security Council on the candidacies for the post of Secretary-General are informal and closed. They are held to assess the level of support for the candidates. Their results are not officially published. –0–
