Moscow, July 30 /Xinhua/ — The Moscow Zoo celebrated the birthday of the giant panda Dindin, who turned 9 on July 30, and will celebrate the tenth birthday of her partner Zhui on July 31. This was reported by the zoo’s general director Svetlana Akulova.
For the birthday girl, they prepared an ice cake with bamboo, sweet potato, apples, carrots, and other vegetables. They also placed a bamboo deck chair with an umbrella in the enclosure.
According to the Russo-Chinese agreement, Zhui and Dinding, who arrived in Moscow on April 29, 2019, will live in Russia for 15 years.
On the occasion of Dindin and Zhui’s birthday, the Moscow Zoo is hosting the traditional Panda Week, which runs from July 25 to August 2. During these days, visitors to the zoo can participate in master classes, lectures, quests, and other events. The zoo’s general director noted that Panda Week is an excellent opportunity to gain new knowledge about Chinese culture, get closer to China’s fauna, and have a good time with the whole family.
According to S. Akulova, the pandas’ characters changed with age: their behavior became less spontaneous and playful, and they developed the seriousness and dignity inherent in adult individuals. At the same time, Dindin succeeded in her role as a mother and raised her daughter Katyusha without human intervention — just as giant pandas usually raise their cubs in the wild.
“Dindin currently weighs 125 kg, and if she stands on her hind legs, her height is 160 cm. The male Zhui is larger, weighing 138 kg, and when he stands on his hind legs, his height reaches 175 cm. Such weight and height indicate that they feel well,” emphasized the CEO. By human standards, the age of the two pandas is currently in the range of 33-35 years.
But the special joy for zoo visitors is their daughter — the panda Katyusha, who frolics, plays, and delights like a baby. This year, a new pavilion is planned to be built for the main star of the Moscow Zoo, with the work already in its final stages.
“We tried to make the pavilion for Katyusha the best. Therefore, we are confident that our Chinese colleagues will accept it, and this year we will launch it. Our Katyusha will live and be happy in a beautiful enclosure,” said S. Akulova.
Katjusha’s birthday will be celebrated by the Moscow Zoo on August 24. This year she turns 3 years old. Upon reaching the age of four, according to the international species conservation program, Katjusha will return to China to participate in a breeding program. –0–
