Saint Petersburg, July 29 /Xinhua/ — The number of Manchurian / Amur / tigers in Russia increased from 430 to 750 individuals from 2013 to 2025. This was reported on Wednesday by RIA Novosti citing the press service of the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
It is noted that the population growth is the result of a systemic effort to create specially protected areas, combat poaching, and increase the prey base for the tiger. Every Manchurian tiger in Russia is registered, with monitoring carried out through tracking, camera traps, and genetic analysis.
According to the portal “Nauka.rf,” by the mid-20th century, Siberian tigers were on the brink of complete extinction, with no more than 40 individuals remaining in the wild. The preservation of the population became possible thanks to the many years of work by scientists, state inspectors, veterinary specialists, and staff of specially protected natural areas.
International Tiger Day is observed on July 29. The history of the holiday began in 2010 in Saint Petersburg, where the first International Forum on issues related to tiger conservation on Earth was held. At this forum, a global program for the restoration of tiger populations was approved.
Manchurian tigers are the largest cats in the world. This is the only tiger subspecies living in harsh winter conditions, down to minus 45 degrees Celsius. The weight of an adult individual ranges from 180 to 300 kg. –0–
