UN, July 28 /Xinhua/ — The conflict in Ukraine continues to escalate, and the suffering of civilians is worsening, a Chinese representative said on Monday, calling on all parties concerned to make every effort to de-escalate the situation in order to preserve the prospects for an early establishment of peace.
“The developments surrounding the Ukrainian issue cause deep concern, numerous attacks have led to significant casualties on both sides and extensive destruction of infrastructure,” said Sun Lei, the Chargé d’affaires ad interim of the Permanent Mission of China to the UN, at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Ukraine.
The primary task is to achieve a ceasefire and stop hostilities, he noted, adding that an escalation of hostilities will bring even more suffering to the civilian population. The earliest possible cessation of fire and hostilities serves the fundamental and long-term interests of the parties involved and corresponds to the general expectations of the international community.
“China urges an immediate cessation of all attacks on civilians, calls on the parties involved to remain calm and exercise restraint, strictly adhere to international humanitarian law, protect the civilian population and civilian infrastructure, and make every effort to de-escalate the situation in order to preserve the prospects for a swift establishment of peace,” said Sun Lei.
The diplomat noted that the fundamental solution to the problem lies in a commitment to dialogue and negotiations, urging the relevant parties to maintain interaction, demonstrate political will, strengthen mutual trust through dialogue, achieve consensus during negotiations, and strive to conclude a comprehensive, durable, and legally binding peace agreement. “As long as negotiations can start and continue, there remains hope for peace.”
He emphasized that since Russia, Ukraine, and European countries are neighbors who cannot distance themselves from each other, achieving harmonious coexistence and ensuring common security are the only realistic choices.
Noting that China’s position on the Ukrainian issue remains unchanged, Sun Lei stated that Beijing firmly advocates for a ceasefire and the cessation of hostilities. According to him, China maintains close contacts with Russia, Ukraine, and other interested parties, actively engages in shuttle diplomacy, and makes significant efforts, acting in its own way, to facilitate peace negotiations.
“China is ready to cooperate with the international community and continue to play a constructive role in advancing the political settlement of the crisis,” he assured.
