Beijing, July 28 /Xinhua/ — The quality of air and water in China continued to improve in the first half of this year, as China intensified efforts to combat air pollution and protect water resources, said Pei Xiaofei, an official spokesperson for the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the PRC, at a press conference on Tuesday.
In January-June, the average concentration of PM2.5 particles in the air of 339 cities at the district level or higher was 29.9 micrograms per cubic meter. The year-on-year decrease was 6.6 percent, said Pei Xiaofei.
The share of days with good or excellent air quality in these cities during the specified period was 82.8%, which is 4.5 percentage points higher than in the same period last year.
According to the ministry, in the first half of the year, the share of surface waters classified as classes I-III on the five-level scale was 87.4 percent, which is 3 percentage points higher compared to the same period of the previous year.
In China, the quality of surface water is classified into five classes. Class I corresponds to the best quality. During the same period, the proportion of surface water below Class V, the lowest level on the mentioned scale, was 0.9%, decreasing by 1.2 percentage points year-on-year. -0-
