Bishkek, July 27 /Xinhua/ — The SCO Media and Think Tanks Summit 2026 on the theme “The Significance of the ‘Shanghai Spirit’ in the New Era: From Value Consensus to Cooperation Practice” opened on Monday in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. The event is attended by about 260 representatives from nearly 150 leading media outlets, renowned think tanks, and government agencies of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member countries, as well as the SCO Secretariat.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the summit, the head of the Information Policy Service of the Administration of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Dayirbek Orunbekov, stated that in the modern world, the media and analytical centers carry significant responsibility for shaping public opinion, strengthening trust, and ensuring security between states. He expressed confidence that the current summit would contribute to strengthening information security within the SCO framework, developing scientific and expert cooperation, and reinforcing friendly ties between peoples.
Deputy General Director of the Xinhua News Agency Xi Yanchun emphasized in her speech that Xinhua constantly strives to tell the stories of the SCO and to spread the voice of the SCO. According to her, the media and analytical centers should continue to serve as bridges and connecting links within the organization, be the bearers of unity and mutual trust, the driving force of development and prosperity, builders of bridges for humanitarian exchanges, advocates of multilateralism, and pioneers of pragmatic cooperation.
Director of the Kyrgyz National Information Agency Kabar, Mederbek Shermetaliev, pointed out that the SCO member states should jointly establish a mechanism for regular dialogue between analytical centers, develop joint research, train young experts, expand the exchange of experience among media workers, and consistently deepen intellectual, informational, and humanitarian cooperation.
As noted by the Chinese Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Liu Jianping, the media and analytical centers are not only chroniclers of the era but also carriers of ideas of cooperation. She emphasized that the interaction between the media and analytical centers has become an important practice in implementing the “Shanghai Spirit”.
According to Kadyirbek Sarbaev, senior expert of the SCO Secretariat, the current summit will contribute to the further development of exchanges and cooperation between media and analytical centers within the organization, as well as its long-term development.
The head of the Department of the Center for Modern History at the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, Mirzokhid Rakhimov, pointed out that the SCO should rely on the rich heritage of civilizational interactions along the Great Silk Road and, by expanding contacts between analytical centers, contribute to strengthening the region’s interconnectedness, its sustainable development, and stability.
The SCO Media and Think Tanks Summit 2026 is being held in Bishkek from July 26 to 30. It is organized by the Xinhua News Agency and the Kyrgyz national news agency Kabar.
During the summit, reports from two analytical centers titled “The contemporary specifics and global significance of Xi Jinping’s ideas on party building” were presented in Kyrgyz and Russian, as well as Chinese, English, Kyrgyz, and Russian versions of the report “Defending equality and justice, improving global governance: achievements, opportunities, and prospects for SCO cooperation.” –0–
