Kinshasa, July 26 /Xinhua/ — At least 32 civilians have been killed in the last 72 hours as a result of two attacks attributed to the “Allied Democratic Forces” /ADF/ in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo /DRC/. Local media reported this on Saturday.
According to UN-supported Congolese Radio Okapi, the attacks were directed against villages in the Mambasa territory. Representatives of local civil society stated that the death toll is preliminary, as search operations are ongoing.
The surge in violence has triggered a new wave of displacement in the affected villages and neighboring communities. Residents are fleeing due to fears of further incursions.
As of Saturday evening, neither local authorities nor the country’s armed forces have officially commented on the recent attacks.
Local civil society organizations stated that an armed group killed more than 100 people in about 20 villages throughout Mambasa territory since March of this year.
ADF — the Central African branch of the “Islamic State” — is a Ugandan rebel group operating in eastern DRC.
