Berlin, July 26 /Xinhua/ — On Saturday evening in central Berlin, during a mass event supporting LGBT rights, a car crashed into the crowd, resulting in one death and 16 injuries, some of whom are in serious condition. This was reported by the police on the social network X.
The driver of a small white van drove into a crowd at around 10:00 p.m. local time /8:00 p.m. GMT/. The event was interrupted and the area was cordoned off. Numerous police officers, firefighters, and paramedics were dispatched to the scene.
According to the German news agency dpa, witnesses reported to the police that some people sustained stab wounds. Investigators are determining whether there was a second phase of the attack after the car drove into the crowd.
An active search is underway for one or more suspects. The motives and circumstances of the incident are still being investigated, police reported.
The ruling mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, wrote on X that the peaceful event was attacked “in the most brutal way,” calling it “an attack on our free and open society.”
This year, tens of thousands of people participated in the event.
