Work on installing a transparent dome has begun on the building of the Higher School of Philosophy, History and Social Sciences, which is being constructed on the basis of the ‘Kantiana’ campus of the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University (BFU) in Kaliningrad. This was reported by Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.
“The development of modern university infrastructure remains one of the important directions of the work of Russia’s construction sector. New world-class campuses are being built by order of the President. They create comfortable conditions for studying, scientific activity, and the implementation of youth projects. Such a project is also being implemented at the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University in Kaliningrad. There, the installation of a translucent dome with an area of more than 1,400 sq. m on one of the buildings has begun. This engineering solution will provide the atrium with natural lighting and will become one of the architectural features of the educational complex. The implementation of the project will allow the creation of a modern educational space that meets high standards of quality and comfort. There is still a lot of work ahead. The plan is to create a network of 40 campuses by 2036,” noted Marat Khusnullin.
A translucent dome will cover the atrium of the Graduate School of Philosophy, History, and Social Sciences and will consist of 536 double-glazed units mounted on a metal frame with a total weight of about 240 tons. A modern self-supporting spatial system has been used for this, combining high load-bearing capacity, low self-weight, and architectural expressiveness. This design evenly distributes the load onto the building and allows the creation of a bright open space.
“The installation of the dome includes modern solutions for thermal and waterproof insulation, joint sealing, and all metal elements are protected with a fire-resistant coating. Currently, about 38% of the metal frame has been installed, and the work is planned to be fully completed by autumn 2026,” said Karen Oganesyan, General Director of the PPP ‘Unified Customer.’
About 1,200 students will study in the building of the Graduate School of Philosophy, History, and Social Sciences, which has an area of more than 16,000 square meters. It will include lecture halls for stream teaching, computer labs, classrooms for group studies, a library with reading rooms, laboratories, and much more.
“The campus is still under construction, but the building with the tower and clock, as well as the library under the glass dome, have already become the landmark of the new space. I am confident that the library will become the heart of the university town – a place for scientific discussions, book traditions, and digital technologies, as well as a new museum-scientific location in Kaliningrad. Its collection comprises 330,000 paper volumes, and digital resources are virtually unlimited. Most publications will be open access – they can be selected in four thematic towers. The library will also have two reading rooms with rare editions in Russian and foreign languages, digital services, and public spaces for project work and communication,” said Maxim Demin, rector of the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University.
