Top news of the day at the UN and worldwide: Winter response plan for Ukraine, Security Council debates on natural resource governance, shrinking political space in Nicaragua, general assembly with candidates for the UN Secretary-General post.
Aid to Ukraine
On the eve of another winter, which Ukraine may once again face under conditions of war, the UN and partners have presented the Winter Response Plan for the 2026–2027 period. To assist 2.1 million of the country’s most vulnerable residents, $358.4 million is required. The plan was developed taking into account the experience of last winter, when strikes led to widespread disruptions in heating, water, and electricity supply. From October 2026 to March 2027, humanitarian organizations plan to provide support with heating and home repairs, as well as medical and food assistance, protection, and cash payments.
Natural resources
Illegal extraction and exploitation of natural resources fuel conflicts, strengthen the influence of criminal groups, and deprive countries of the opportunity to use their own wealth for development purposes. This was stated by UN Secretary-General António Guterres during a high-level open debate held today at the Security Council. According to the UN chief, the growing global demand for minerals used in electronics and clean energy sectors opens new opportunities. At the same time, he emphasized that countries and local communities should primarily benefit from the natural wealth they possess.
The situation in Nicaragua
The UN Secretary-General is closely monitoring the developments in Nicaragua and expresses concern over the ongoing shrinking of civil and political space in the country. This was stated today by the UN Chief Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric. The UN reminds that the authorities are responsible for upholding human rights and must ensure that all citizens have the opportunity to participate freely and safely in public life, including exercising their right to vote. According to reports, Nicaragua’s co-president Daniel Ortega announced that the elections scheduled for next year will not be held.
UN Secretary-General Election
On Thursday, July 23, a general assembly will be held in the UN General Assembly Hall in New York with six official candidates for the post of the next Secretary-General of the United Nations. They will answer questions from journalists and meeting participants about the most pressing challenges facing the international community. According to UNGA Chair Annalena Baerbock, this will give the global audience a rare opportunity to get acquainted with the ideas, priorities, and vision of the candidates for one of the most important posts in the world. The meeting will be broadcast on UN Web TV.
