Manila, July 22 /Xinhua/ — The international community must put development at the center of the international agenda. China supports advancing the UN reform in the right direction. This was stated on Wednesday by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Wan Yi, who is also a member of the CPC Central Committee Politburo, made the corresponding statements in the Philippine capital Manila during a meeting with Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, who was also elected chairman of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly /UN GA/.
As the head of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminded, last month the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Tarik Rahman, made a successful official visit to China, during which the leaders of the two countries jointly announced the establishment of a China-Bangladesh community with a shared future for a new era, providing new strategic guidelines and outlining a new plan for the further development of bilateral relations.
According to the Chinese diplomat, China, as a reliable good neighbor and a good friend of Bangladesh, will consistently support the government of this country in its efforts towards effective governance. Wang Yi pointed out that China is ready to jointly implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries with Bangladesh, strengthen strategic communication, deepen political mutual trust, promote high-quality cooperation within the framework of jointly building the “Belt and Road,” and contribute to building a China-Bangladesh community with a shared future in the new era, bringing even more benefits to the peoples of both countries.
Wan Yi congratulated H. Rahman on being elected as the President of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, stating that the modern world is experiencing strong turbulence and the UN is facing serious challenges.
China will firmly uphold the status and role of the UN, promised the head of the Chinese foreign affairs department, adding that the implementation of the goals provided for in the UN Agenda for Sustainable Development up to 2030 is seriously behind schedule and the international community must begin planning development cooperation for the period after 2030.
As noted by the Chinese Foreign Minister, at the high-level meeting of the Group of Friends of Global Governance held in May this year, China made proposals concerning the direction of the UN reform. The Chinese side is ready to work with the elected President of the UN General Assembly to unlock the full potential of the UN, emphasized Wang Yi.
H. Rahman, for his part, stated that China always remains a valuable and reliable partner for Bangladesh and holds an important place in the country’s foreign policy. He pointed out that Bangladesh firmly adheres to the One China principle, is ready to cooperate with China in creating the China-Myanmar-Bangladesh economic corridor, and to jointly build a Bangladesh-China community with a shared future in the new era.
According to H. Rahman, Bangladesh supports four global initiatives put forward by China and wishes to strengthen coordination with it in order to fully utilize the role of the UN and protect multilateralism. –0–
