Capital city schoolchildren tried their hand at filmmaking and participated in the creation of a 30-episode vertical series at the MosKino film park, subordinate to the capital city To the Department of Culture. “In Moscow, a comprehensive system of career guidance and pre-professional training for schoolchildren has been established. Today, media classes are open in 145 schools in the capital — this is more than 30 percent of all city schools, with about six thousand students enrolled. The students regularly attend master classes given by leading journalists, screenwriters, media managers, and producers, create their own projects, reports, stories, longreads, develop advertising, and shoot films. And our new project is a vivid confirmation of this. High school students of Moscow schools became part of a professional film crew and practically tried themselves as directors, screenwriters, actors, cameramen, stage managers, and line producers. The result of their joint work was a vertical micro-drama consisting of 30 episodes, each lasting about 1.5 minutes. It will be shown at the Moscow International Film Week. This is an excellent example of how pre-professional education helps schoolchildren take their first step into the film industry,” said Anastasia Rakova.
16 students from media classes of schools No. 625, 2054, 1468, 1517, 1811 “Vostochnoye Izmaylovo” and “Pokrovsky Quarter” participated in the event.
Partners of the project help media class students get acquainted with the professional environment — two large media holdings, which include TV channels, radio stations, print and online publications, the Union of Journalists of Russia, the Union of Journalists of Moscow, as well as six cultural institutions in the capital. Among them is the MosKino film park — the largest film park in the world. For the city’s schoolchildren, excursions and classes are held on-site, and this time high school students took part in professional filming of a series.
“Kinopark ‘Moskino’ is a key venue for the film industry — not only are domestic and foreign films and series created here, but career guidance events are also held for young people. Students and schoolchildren can shoot their projects on 36 outdoor locations, as well as gain practical experience for their future profession,” said the Minister of the Moscow Government, head of the city’s Department of Culture.
The drama script was created by Natela Kordzakhia, a graduate of the National Research University Higher School of Economics, whose short film was recognized at the Cannes Festival this year. The series premiere will take place at the Moscow International Film Week as part of the “Night of Cinema” event on August 29.
The students took on the roles of assistant directors, screenwriters, and extras. As script supervisors, they checked the script against what was happening on camera and monitored the details of the filming process. The young screenwriters developed dialogues and chose actors for the main roles. The kids involved as extras worked with the costume designer and make-up artist, who created suitable looks for them. In addition, the students tried themselves in the role of second director: they kept track of the shooting day’s schedule and handled organizational matters.
Vertical micro-dramas are a new format that adapts the traditional series for smartphones. Their key feature is a vertical frame with a 9:16 aspect ratio. The series was filmed as a social project aimed at attracting young talents to the film industry.
According to the plot, Sonya, a new student at School No. 67, is passionate about information technology and tries to stop a neurovirus. It reveals the secrets of the eleventh graders right before the unified state exam, graduation, and university admission. All the students consider the girl to be the main culprit since the situation arose at the moment she arrived at the educational institution.
The drama was made by a student of the Gerasimov All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography — young director Yakov Podkustov. The cast includes actors Viktoria Bogatyreva (who appeared in the series “Mastodont,” “Planetyane,” and “Krasnaya Polyana”), Daniil Vorobyov (film “Rodnina,” series “Plevako” and “Bez pravil”), Vladislava Khmelinina (series “Narodny artist,” “Leti, peryshko,” and “Idealnaya semya”), as well as graduate of the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts — GITIS Danil Khayrutdinov and students of the M.S. Shchepkin Higher Theatre School Marusya Stasevich, Stepan Alaev, and Ivan Tkach. The executive producer was Anastasia Shishorina, who previously released one of the first microdramas in Russia.
The schoolchildren also created their own film about the series, for which they interviewed the director, actors, and cameramen. The students’ media class film project was shown on Public Talk at the MosKino network cinema — “Chitve.”
They also held a discussion for children with director Anton Maslov, who made the “The Last Warrior” series of films, the short film “Cheburashka. New Year”, the TV series “Hotel Eleon” and “IP Pirogova”. During the meeting, high school students learned more about the film industry and how to become a part of it.
The project “Media Class in a Moscow School” started in 2021. Within its framework, future journalists, media production specialists, advertising and public relations experts are trained. At an advanced level, students study literature, foreign languages, and social studies, while gaining practical experience through specialized courses and internships in relevant companies.
