Curators of the Traffic Management Center (TMC) develop about a thousand projects annually to improve traffic organization. These include new pedestrian crossings, changes in traffic light operation, re-marking, and other solutions that make routes safer and more convenient.
Today, 52 diagonal pedestrian crossings have been set up in the capital. They allow people to cross not two sides of the intersection sequentially, but to take the shortest route during one green pedestrian signal. For this, specialists apply special markings and configure a separate pedestrian phase on the traffic light, during which vehicle traffic through the intersection is prohibited.
“We continue to make the daily routes of Muscovites safer and more convenient, as instructed by Sergey Sobyanin within the framework of the transport development strategy until 2030. Today in the capital, under the projects of the road coordinators of the Traffic Management Center, 52 diagonal pedestrian crossings are already operational. Along with the new markings, specialists adjust the traffic lights, thanks to which the crossing time is noticeably reduced, and the safety of pedestrians and drivers is also increased,” said the Deputy Mayor of Moscow, head of the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development.
The arrangement of diagonal pedestrian crossings began in an experimental format in 2014: the first appeared in the South-Eastern Administrative District (SEAD) at the intersection of Novomaryinskaya Street and Myachkovsky Boulevard. Today, crossings are established only where they are truly effective — at intersections with a high pedestrian flow, where changing the traffic light scheme does not create additional delays for vehicles. Specialists from the Center for Traffic Management (CTM) preliminarily analyze traffic and pedestrian flows to reduce crossing time for citizens without worsening driving conditions for cars.
Diagonal crossings are now present in all districts of the capital. For example, in the Central Administrative District at the intersection of Pogodinskaya Street, Maly Savvinsky Lane, and Abrikosovsky Lane. Thanks to this, it is more convenient for residents to get to the kindergarten, school, and hospital.
In the North-Eastern Administrative Okrug, the crossing was arranged at the intersection of Oktyabrskaya Street and the 3rd Maryina Roshcha Drive. As a result, the route to educational institutions, shops, and pharmacies has become faster.
In the Southern Administrative District, a crossing was placed at the intersection of Donskoy and Akademik Petrovsky streets, making it more convenient for pedestrians to reach universities, recreational areas, and cultural spaces.
In the North-Western Administrative Okrug, the diagonal crossing is located at the intersection of Kurkinskoye Highway and Landysheva Street; in the Eastern Administrative Okrug — at the streets Svyatoozerskaya and Tatyana Makarova; in the South-Western Administrative Okrug — at the streets Azovskaya and Sivashskaya; in the South-Eastern Administrative Okrug — at Novomarinskaya Street and Perervinsky Boulevard.
Eight diagonal crossings have already been arranged in the Western Administrative Okrug: near metro stations, schools, universities, shops, and parks. One of them — at the intersection of Pokryshkin and Akademik Anokhin Streets — shortens the route to public transport stops and educational institutions, while the one at the intersection of Gerasim Kurin and Tarutinskaya Streets connects residential neighborhoods with metro stations and the First Moscow Central Diameter.
The crossing connecting Proizvodstvennaya Street and Aviatorov Street makes social infrastructure and recreational areas more accessible and closer for the residents of the Solntsevo district. Other crossings are located at the intersections of Barklaya and Bolshaya Filevskaya streets, Przhevalskogo and Bolshaya Ochakovskaya streets, Partizanskaya and Molodogvardeyskaya streets, Kastanaevskaya and Pivchenkova streets, as well as Bolshaya Ochakovskaya and 1st Ochakovsky Lane.
In 2026, at the request of city residents, a diagonal crosswalk will appear in the Troparevo-Nikulino district: at the intersection of Troparevskaya Street and Akademik Anokhin Street. It will become the ninth in the Western Administrative Okrug. There is a heavy pedestrian flow here towards the clinic, public transport stops, and residential areas. The new scheme will allow crossing the intersection in one traffic light cycle, saving time.
“Movement around the city”: over 630 residents’ proposals implemented in the capital
In 2026, approximately 300 new at-grade pedestrian crossings are planned to be installed in Moscow under the projects of the traffic coordinators of the TsODD. When selecting locations, specialists take into account residents’ requests and the demand for routes. The crossings will be situated near public transport stops, metro stations, the Moscow Central Circle, social facilities, shops, parks, and other popular spots. For example, in the Northern Administrative District on Kronstadt Boulevard (building 57), residents will have another safe route to the bus stop.
