Beijing, July 22 /Xinhua/ — More than 53,000 new university graduates in China are going to less developed and rural areas of the country to participate in the annual volunteer service program, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China /CYLC/ said on Tuesday.
Volunteers approved by local authorities and universities across the country will be dispatched to 27 provincial-level regions, including the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Xizang Autonomous Region, Jilin and Guizhou provinces, as well as the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. They will engage in grassroots volunteer activities in these regions.
According to the Central Committee of the KSMK, this year newly recruited volunteers will be engaged in volunteer activities for 1-3 years in such areas as rural education, rural area development, rural healthcare, grassroots social management, and grassroots youth work.
More than 90 percent of positions are located in settlements and villages, which emphasizes the program’s focus on strengthening services at the grassroots level, according to a statement from COSME.
Since the launch of the program in 2003, nearly 600 thousand university graduates have responded to the party’s call to become volunteers in western regions, rural areas, and grassroots communities.
