Deterioration of the situation for the civilian population of Ukraine
The UN is recording a rapid deterioration of the situation for the civilian population of Ukraine against the backdrop of a new wave of long-range strikes hitting residential areas and critically important infrastructure objects. United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Office representative Tamin Al‑Hitan on Tuesday called the scale and intensity of the attacks “shocking” and emphasized the need for an immediate cessation of escalation. Last Sunday, Kyiv was struck for the seventh time in a month: no fewer than 35 ballistic and hypersonic cruise missiles were launched at the capital — the largest missile attack on the city since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
Strikes on Gaza
The Israeli army intensified strikes on the Gaza Strip, resulting in dozens of Palestinians, including children and women, killed and wounded. Nine months after the ceasefire was announced, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported over 1,100 deaths since October 2025. According to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, within just two days, July 17 and 18, a series of Israeli strikes in different districts of Gaza led to the deaths of 21 people, including five members of one family. The UN called for urgent steps to ensure compliance with the ceasefire and to hold those responsible for violations accountable.
Deaths of migrants off the coast of Mauritania
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has expressed concern over reports that 144 people have died or are missing following tragic incidents at sea off the coast of Mauritania last week. It is reported that refugees and migrants went missing after attempting a dangerous sea journey from West Africa to Europe. From July 14 to 18, three rescue operations were conducted in Mauritania, during which 387 migrants were safely brought ashore.
UN report on global food security
The number of people suffering from hunger has been decreasing worldwide for the third consecutive year. However, this progress remains too slow and highly uneven, and armed conflicts, climate shocks, and reductions in international aid could wipe it out. This is the conclusion reached by the authors of the new UN report “The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World.” According to the study, about 645 million people, or 7.8 percent of the world’s population, experienced hunger in 2025. This is nearly 14 million fewer than the previous year and 43 million fewer than in 2022.
