In Moscow, projects overseen by the Traffic Management Center (TMC) curators continue to improve the traffic situation at complex locations. Special attention is given to intersections with heavy traffic flow, where congestion peaks during morning and evening hours. One effective way to alleviate crowded intersections is the addition of waffle road markings. The bright yellow grid of diagonal lines in the center of the intersection serves as a clear visual cue: if a traffic jam forms ahead, driving onto it is prohibited.
“We continue to improve safety and throughput at intersections with heavy traffic. For this, the CAO projects apply waffle markings. They help increase vehicle speed by 15–20 percent and also clear the way for emergency service vehicles. Following Sergey Sobyanin’s instructions, we plan to apply waffle markings at more than nine additional busy intersections by the end of the year,” said the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.
Often, drivers trying to rush through a flashing green light block traffic, creating a locking effect for other directions. The “waffle” visually warns about this and disciplines drivers, reminding them to follow the rules.
Since the beginning of this year, waffle markings have already appeared at 11 intersections in Moscow according to TSPU projects. Five of them are located in the Central Administrative District, three in the South-Western, and one each in the Southern, South-Eastern, and Zelenogradsky districts.
In addition, cameras are installed at such intersections to record traffic violations. If a vehicle stops at an intersection with waffle markings for more than five seconds, the driver may be fined one thousand rubles.
The list of intersections where waffle markings have appeared since the beginning of the year includes: Zhitnaya Street — Mytnaya Street, 1st Dubrovskaya Street — Vorontsovskaya Street, Krasnoprudnaya Street (around house 1), Shmitovsky Drive (around house 29, building 2 — at the entrance to the hospital premises), Bolshaya Serpukhovskaya Street — Stremyanny Lane, Sevastopol Avenue — Khersonskaya Street, Leninsky Avenue — Lomonosovsky Avenue (two grids at one intersection), Lomonosovsky Avenue — Vavilova Street, Gogol Street — Panfilov Street, Moskvorechye Street — Kotlyakovskaya Street, Krasnokazarmennaya Street — Aviamotorny Drive.
