47-year-old Lu Dachuan is a top-level specialist in decorative and applied arts from Guangdong Province. He began studying calligraphy at the age of six under his father’s guidance and now lives in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, specializing in micro calligraphy on ceramics.
Microcalligraphy on ceramics is a technique that combines Chinese calligraphy in a miniature format with colored ceramic technology. The artist uses ceramics as a base and paints hieroglyphs the size of a pinhead on the glazed surface with a brush, either complementing drawings or creating images from the hieroglyphs. The composition and color scheme are chosen depending on the shape of the piece, after which the finished work undergoes a second firing in the kiln.
To expand the aesthetic possibilities of micro-calligraphy on ceramics, Liu Dachuan strives to integrate this technique into ceramic painting in various forms, thereby opening new facets of Chinese calligraphy. On one square centimeter of ceramic surface, he can write up to 163 characters, and on an area the size of a fingernail — more than a hundred characters, which remain clearly readable even under a magnifying glass. His works have repeatedly received gold awards for cultural innovation in decorative and applied arts at the China International Cultural Industry Fair.
