NSU and AIRI will create a joint educational and scientific laboratory for industrial artificial intelligence

Novosibirsk State University and AIRI Institute signed an agreement to create a joint laboratory of industrial artificial intelligence. The new division will be developed based on Institute of Intelligent Robotics of NSU and engage in the development of equipment failure prediction systems, intelligent control of robot groups, and generative models for tasks in physics, biomedicine, and astronomy.

AIRi was chosen as a partner because it is currently an institute focused exclusively on artificial intelligence. Another important point is that AIRI offers promising and relevant research and development topics, provides supervisors, and also ensures access to cloud resources, — commented the laboratory head Igor Solodov.

The laboratory will have eight full-time employees: five representing AIRI and three from NSU, with project implementation also involving students—up to 20-30 individuals studying in NSU’s new bachelor’s program “Applied Artificial Intelligence,” which started at NSU in 2025 under the federal project for training highly qualified top AI specialists. Workspace will be arranged at the A. P. Ershov Institute of Informatics Systems, with which AIRI signed a cooperation agreement back in 2025.

For us, establishing a joint laboratory at NSU is a natural step. We already have successful experience in developing joint laboratories with leading Russian universities, and this model has proven its effectiveness: it allows combining fundamental science, engineering expertise, and real industrial challenges. NSU is an undisputed leader of the scientific and educational ecosystem of Siberia and one of the strongest research universities in the country, and we are glad to start working together. — noted Ivan Oseledets, CEO of the AIRI Institute.

In the first year of the laboratory’s operation, it is planned to recruit a group of NSU students and form research teams focused on five key laboratory areas: intelligent diagnostics of industrial equipment, physics-informed models, generative AI for science and medicine, multi-agent control systems for swarm robotics, and industrial data analysis. Each team will be assigned a scientific supervisor and a mentor from AIRI, who has experience in implementing applied AI projects.

It is a great honor for us to cooperate with AIRI — a leading Russian institute in the field of AI. The joint laboratory with AIRI is another step towards training in-demand specialists who will study AI technologies through solving practical problems of industrial partners. At the student level, working in the laboratory is an opportunity to get involved in projects that address challenges in various industries from the very first years. Under the guidance of AIRI experts, coursework, final qualification, and master’s theses will be organized based on the laboratory’s projects, as well as internships within the framework of joint research, — commented Alexey Okunev, Director of the Institute of Intelligent Robotics at NSU.

During the joint work, it is planned to hold scientific seminars, open lectures, and master classes with the participation of AIRI researchers; prepare scientific publications in leading world journals and at conferences on artificial intelligence (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, and others); participate in the creation of open datasets and benchmarks demanded by the research community; implement joint projects with industrial and scientific organizations focused on the practical application of developments.

By the end of the first year, software prototypes are planned to be created, and by the end of the third year — working prototypes of technologies, such as equipment failure prediction systems, intelligent management of robot groups, generative models for physics, biomedicine, and astronomy tasks, ready for pilot testing at partner enterprises.

Among the laboratory’s potential partners are enterprises in the oil and gas, energy, metallurgical, chemical, engineering, and mining industries; manufacturers of batteries, energy storage systems, and companies engaged in electrochemical technologies; developers of robotic complexes, autonomous transport, logistics systems, and unmanned solutions; medical organizations, biotechnology companies, and scientific institutes; Russian and international research laboratories and IT companies.

Funding will be based on a project principle: first, a partner is sought; for a specific task, a team is formed involving research staff, experts, and laboratory students; then the project is carried out, and based on the results, the development is implemented in the actual production process.

The activities of the joint laboratory will primarily contribute to raising the level of Novosibirsk’s scientific leaders, as well as enable the university to attract additional funding through the implementation of major projects supported by partners.
