Beijing, July 20 /Xinhua/ — China strictly adheres to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and firmly supports the cause of the UN. This was stated on Monday by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Wan Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the corresponding statement during a meeting in Beijing with the Permanent Representative of Guyana to the UN and candidate for the next UN Secretary-General, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett.

K. Rodriguez-Birkett indicated that regardless of changes in the situation, multilateralism is not an option for the international community, but an urgent necessity.

She expressed support for UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 and pledged to strictly adhere to the One China principle. Additionally, the Guyanese diplomat highly praised the four major global initiatives proposed by China and the PRC’s efforts to establish a World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization.

K. Rodriguez-Birkett assured that she will continue to strive for UN reform so that the organization becomes more flexible and effective, embodies the principles of honesty and justice, and places sustainable development at the forefront of the international agenda.

As noted by Wang Yi, all parties expect that the next Secretary-General will lead the UN on the path of overcoming difficulties and challenges and will play a proper role in the cause of international peace and development.

“The UN is not perfect, but without the UN the world would be worse,” emphasized the Chinese diplomat.

Recalling that this year marks the 55th anniversary of the restoration of the lawful seat of the People’s Republic of China in the United Nations, Wang Yi stated that no matter how the international situation changes, China has always been and will remain a builder of peace worldwide, a contributor to global development, and a defender of the international order.

According to him, China intends to participate responsibly and constructively in the election process of the next Secretary-General and supports the election in accordance with the UN Charter of a Secretary-General who will strictly abide by the UN Charter, be highly competent, impartial, honest, and responsibly fulfill his duties.
