Shanghai, July 17 /Xinhua/ — Chinese President Xi Jinping affirmed China’s firm support for the United Nations on Friday during a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who arrived in Shanghai to participate in the 2026 World Conference on Artificial Intelligence and the High-Level Conference on Global Artificial Intelligence Governance.
The Chinese leader highly praised A. Guterres’s work over the decade since his appointment as UN Secretary-General, including his efforts to firmly uphold multilateralism, address global challenges such as climate change, promote global governance in new areas including artificial intelligence, and initiate the UN reform process.
Recalling that this year marks the 55th anniversary of the restoration of the lawful seat of the People’s Republic of China in the UN, Xi Jinping pointed out that since then China has been consistently committed to the cause of building peace worldwide, contributing to global development, safeguarding the international order, and firmly supporting the United Nations.
The Chairman of the PRC added that the concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind and the four global initiatives he proposed were put forward, among other things, with one important goal — to uphold the status and authority of the UN.
As emphasized by the Chinese leader, in the current unsettled and changing international situation it is increasingly necessary to practice genuine multilateralism and to revive the status and role of the UN. –0–
