Beijing, July 17 /Xinhua/ — China’s railway construction maintained steady momentum in the first half of 2026, with significant progress achieved on several key projects, marking a confident start to the development of the country’s railway sector during the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), the national railway operator reported on Friday.

Investment in fixed assets of the railway sector amounted to 363.2 billion yuan (about 53.46 billion US dollars) in the first six months of the year, which is 2.1 percent more compared to the same period last year, reported the China National Railway Corporation (CNR).

During this period, a total of 355.2 km of new railway lines were put into operation, the company reported.

Breakthroughs have been achieved in a number of technically complex projects, highlighting the country’s growing capabilities in railway equipment, construction management, and intelligent construction, the company noted.

China has built the world’s largest high-speed railway network. By the end of 2025, the total length of operational railways in the country reached 165,000 km, including more than 50,000 km of high-speed railway lines.

The total operational length of the national railways is expected to reach 180,000 km by the end of 2030, including approximately 60,000 km of high-speed railway lines, the KGZhK reported. -0-
