Xining, July 17 /Xinhua/ — As of the end of June 2026, the installed capacity of solar thermal power plants /STPP/ in China reached 2.1 GW, allowing the country to take second place in the world after Spain, the China Electricity Council reported.
Currently, 24 STES projects have been implemented in the country, and another 26 projects with a total capacity of 3.2 GW are under construction, according to data from the aforementioned industry organization, disclosed on Thursday at the Clean Energy Forum in Qinghai Province /Northwest China/.
At a CSP plant, sunlight is concentrated using mirrors to generate heat, which can be stored and used to produce electricity when needed. The stable and dispatchable power of such facilities allows power grids to manage fluctuations in wind and photovoltaic generation.
The localization level of CSP technologies and equipment in China has exceeded 95%. With the increase in the share of domestic developments, the average construction costs of CSP plants over the past decade have halved – to approximately 15,000 yuan / about 2,200 USD / per kilowatt.
